Bag Check, Aisle Three

It switched itself on in her carry-on, right in the security tray. The whole queue went silent.

How it started

I was flying for a long weekend away and, naturally, packed my toy in my carry-on. At security I put my bag in the grey tray, sent it through the scanner and walked through the arch. Then the bag stopped on the conveyor belt and started vibrating. Loudly. Somehow it had switched itself on inside. The whole queue went silent. A security officer lifted my bag, unzipped it and pulled out the very obviously buzzing item. He held it up, looked me dead in the eye and said, 'Ma'am, does this belong to you?' A child in the queue asked her mother what it was. Her mother said, 'A toothbrush, darling.'

Then it happened

I said yes in a voice I didn't recognise. He turned it off, put it back in my bag, zipped it up and said, 'Have a lovely trip.' The woman behind me whispered, 'Which brand?' I made my flight. I have never forgotten to use the travel lock since. On the way home, a different officer just smiled knowingly. The pilot even waved.

The morning after

She later found out the officer told the story in the staff room, and the woman behind her told her whole book club. She flies twice a month now and could swear the security staff at that airport recognise her.
