Line Item of Doom

Her flatmate saw one line on the shared bank statement and circled it in red pen.

How it started

My flatmate and I split everything, so every month we go through a joint bank statement with highlighters and tea. Electricity, broadband, the weekly shop. I'd forgotten that my first ever toy purchase had gone through on the same card, with the shop's very descriptive name right there in print. I realised mid-sip. I tried to casually turn the page. Too late. She'd already seen it, gone quiet, then picked up the red pen and circled it slowly. My face went the colour of the highlighter. I considered pretending it was a kitchen appliance. I considered moving out. I considered faking a phone call. She just kept staring at the page, very quietly, and I braced for the worst conversation of my adult life.

Then it happened

In the margin she wrote: 'Honestly? Iconic. Link please.' We laughed until we cried. Then we spent an hour comparing reviews and she bought one too. Now we have a joint toy-cleaner budget line and it's my favourite thing on the statement. We call it our wellness fund. She keeps the old statement on the fridge, red circle and all, as a reminder that the best conversations start with a little mortification and a very good friend.

The morning after

Their landlord, who is copied on the bills, has never said a word, but did send a suspiciously cheerful Christmas card. Her flatmate now circles everything in red as a joke. The statement has become the most entertaining document in the flat.
