Hide and Seek, Age 30
Fifteen years of hiding a crush on her best friend's brother. At the wedding, he finally said something.
How it started
I was fourteen when my best friend's older brother taught us to ride bikes without hands, and I decided then and there he was the most beautiful person alive. I spent the next fifteen years pretending otherwise. I sat across from him at birthday dinners, fake-laughed at his girlfriends' jokes and once hid in a bathroom at a barbecue because he complimented my haircut. Nobody knew. Not even her. Then she got married, and I was maid of honour, and he was best man. We were paired for the walk down the aisle, arm in arm, and I was concentrating so hard on not tripping that I barely heard him lean in and whisper: 'Took you long enough.'
Then it happened
I asked what he meant, very casually, while internally screaming. He said he'd been waiting for me to look at him the way I looked at him when I thought nobody was watching, and he'd given up hope around year ten. We danced every slow song. The bride saw us at the end of the night and said, 'Oh, thank God, finally.'
The morning after
By brunch the next day the group chat knew everything. Her best friend called it the best wedding present she'd ever received. Their mothers are already arguing about whose family gets Christmas, and the bride insists on a speech at their wedding, titled 'I Knew'.
