The Best Man's Brother

Seated next to her ex's older brother at the wedding. By dessert, they'd swapped numbers.

How it started

Going to my ex's wedding was already a lot. We'd ended well, years earlier, and I genuinely wanted to celebrate him. But the seating chart had a sense of humour: I was placed next to his older brother, whom I'd met a handful of times and remembered as quiet and serious. Within ten minutes he'd made me laugh so hard I snorted wine. He did impressions of every aunt in the room. He knew exactly which speech jokes would land. By the main course we were whispering commentary like naughty schoolkids, and by dessert he'd written his number on a place card and slid it to me.

Then it happened

I waited a week, feeling strange about it, and then called. We talked for three hours. We told my ex together over coffee; he laughed and said he'd always thought we'd get on. A year later I was back at the family Christmas table, just on a very different chair. My ex gave a speech at our engagement party. It was very funny.

The morning after

The aunts had been taking bets since the wedding. One of them won forty pounds. At Christmas dinner the ex raised a toast to 'the best seating plan in history'. The place card is framed above their fireplace.
