Unwrapped in Public

Her friends gave her a vibrator as a joke and made her open it at a restaurant.

How it started

For my thirtieth birthday, my friends booked a lovely restaurant, ordered too much wine and slid a beautifully wrapped box across the table. 'Open it now,' they insisted, all grinning. I knew. I absolutely knew from the grins. I tried to put it in my bag. They chanted. Other tables turned to look. So I unwrapped it, very slowly, and there it was: a sleek, pastel vibrator with a gift tag that said 'You deserve better than Kevin.' I wanted to dissolve into the floor. Then the waiter leaned over to top up our glasses, glanced at the box and said, 'Ooh, that's the good one.'

Then it happened

The whole table collapsed. The couple at the next table asked for the brand name. The waiter told us his sister swears by it. And Kevin, the ex in question, was never mentioned again. It remains, genuinely, one of the best gifts I've ever received. The waiter brought out a dessert with a candle shaped like a lightning bolt. I have no idea how he managed it.

The morning after

The photo of her unwrapping it went straight into the group chat and has since become her friends' favourite birthday tradition. The waiter got an enormous tip. Kevin heard about it through mutual friends and, apparently, was furious.
