Wrong Bag, Big Meeting

She grabbed the wrong tote bag for a client meeting. Something rolled across the boardroom table.

How it started

Big pitch day. New suit, perfect slides, a client we'd chased for six months. I'd packed two tote bags the night before, one for work and one for a weekend away, and in the morning rush I grabbed the wrong one. I didn't realise until the meeting. I reached in for a pen and something smooth and pastel slid out of my hand and rolled, slowly and with great dignity, across the polished boardroom table. It came to a stop in front of the client's CEO. Silence. Ten people looked at it. Nobody said a word. The CEO calmly rolled it back towards me, like a bowling ball.

Then it happened

I put it away, took a breath, and finished the pitch. Honestly it was the best presentation I've ever given, because nothing could possibly be worse. We won the account. At the signing, the CEO shook my hand and said only, 'Memorable pitch.' Back at the office my team gave me a silver trophy shaped like a bowling pin. It sits proudly on my desk. Nobody outside the team understands it.

The morning after

The story spread through the industry in a week. Strangers at conferences now come up to her and whisper 'bowling ball'. The client asked for her by name on the next three projects. Her mum thinks she won the account on talent alone.
