One Slow Dance With My Ex-Husband
Two years after a bitter divorce, she walked up to her ex at a friend's wedding. Then the slow song started.
How it started
Joanne Mason met Andrew at fifteen, when he was wearing truly terrible fingerless gloves, and by the end of the night she was hooked anyway. They married young and raised two kids in an Oxfordshire village. Then her career took off as a trainee prison governor, his jealousy grew with every work trip, and the marriage slowly came apart. When he started seeing someone from his own job, she filed for divorce. For two years he blanked her in the village street, and Christmas with the kids was frosty silence. So when a summer wedding invitation arrived in 2009, with the groom one of Andrew's friends, Joanne nearly said no. Her grown-up daughter talked her into going as her plus-one.
Then it happened
At dinner, sick of the tension, Joanne marched over and asked her ex to join them for a drink. It was oddly easy. He danced with their daughter, then turned and asked Joanne. A slow song came on, their eyes met for the first time since the split, and the jolt hit them both. He took a lift home with them, came in for 'coffee' and talked with her until the small hours. As she put it: 'Andrew wasn't going home. He was home!'
The morning after
Their son woke up to a man's jacket on the sofa, rummaged through the pockets to find out who Mum had brought home, and pulled out his own dad's wallet. Andrew moved back in that same day. Three months later he proposed again, they remarried in New York, and a new baby was on the way.
