The Party That Wasn't an MLM

She expected another sales party. She went home with a vibrator and a new attitude.

How it started

Jen McGuire lives in a small town where every party seems to be a sales pitch. After turning down two invitations, she felt obliged to say yes to the third. She ironed a shirt, made a hot dip and brought thirty dollars, assuming she'd end up with a face cream or a kitchen gadget she'd never use. Instead she walked into a cosy bungalow full of moms she knew from the grocery store and swim lessons, all drinking wine and passing around toys. Credit cards were out. Women were heading to a private room to fill their bags. Jen, who had spent her thirties pouring everything into her kids and work, admits she blushed all the way to her toes and wished she was anywhere else.

Then it happened

Then the room changed her mind. When she confessed she'd never owned a vibrator, the other moms said that had been them too, and they cheerfully helped her choose a 'nice starter model'. She tried it that night, with the dog banished outside the bedroom door. Over the following weeks she learned what she liked on her own schedule and says it truly changed her life.

The morning after

By the next school run, half the moms from that party were exchanging knowing smiles at the gate. Jen admits she now looks at her neighbours completely differently. The host apparently had to reorder stock twice, and the dog, still banished from the bedroom, has never quite forgiven her.
