Coffee Run, Then Forever

Same federal agency, three years, never met. One coffee changed everything.

How it started

Washingtonian tells the story of Candace Snell and Joey Cain, who worked at the same federal law enforcement agency for three years without ever crossing paths. When they finally met, Candace says one look into Joey's blue eyes brought a strange sense of calm, as if she already knew he was special. Joey felt the same and wanted to learn everything about her. What began as two co-workers grabbing a casual coffee turned into a friendship and, slowly, into something more. Their first proper date was at National Harbor, where Joey surprised her with VIP tickets to Cavalia, an equestrian show. There was a private happy hour, front-row seats and a stable tour, a perfect pick for someone who loves horses.

Then it happened

They dated for two years. Then Joey arranged what Candace thought was a memorial gathering at a tree her family had planted for her late father. Instead he walked over with flowers as their song played, followed by her dad's favourite band, and proposed in front of her whole family. Champagne followed, and later a romantic countryside wedding.

The morning after

Colleagues claimed they'd seen it coming for months. The wedding was a dreamy countryside affair with peonies, garden roses and gold candlesticks, and their first dance came after weeks of secret lessons. Joey said watching that dance come together was his favourite moment of the whole day.
