Forty Minutes, Floor 12

Forty minutes stuck between floors with the VP she'd been avoiding for months.

How it started

The new VP joined in spring, and I spent months avoiding him. Not because he was unpleasant, but because every time he looked at me in a meeting I forgot words like 'quarterly'. I took the stairs. I timed my coffee runs. Then one Thursday evening I stepped into the lift, the doors closed, he stepped in at the last second and we lurched to a stop between floors eleven and twelve. The emergency phone said help was on the way, in about forty minutes. So we sat on the floor in our work clothes. He offered me half his sandwich. I told him about my disastrous dating life. He told me about his.

Then it happened

When the doors finally opened, the security guard took one look at us, sitting very close and laughing, and said, 'I'll give you a minute.' The VP asked me to dinner in the lobby. We kept it quiet until it was serious, then told HR properly. Our colleagues pretended to be surprised. The security guard did not. He winked at our wedding.

The morning after

The security footage from that night became office legend, although nobody admits to having seen it. They now take the stairs together, holding hands. The broken lift has a plaque on it, put up by colleagues. It says 'Out of order. In love.'
