He Kept the Playlist

Three years after the breakup, Spotify showed her that her ex still played 'Our Songs'. Daily.

How it started

We made a shared playlist in our first month together and called it 'Our Songs'. Forty tracks, from the song at the bar where we met to the one we slow-danced to in the kitchen. When we broke up three years ago, I stopped listening, but neither of us deleted it. Then one night I opened Spotify and saw the friend activity panel. There was his name, listening to 'Our Songs', at 2am. I checked the next night. And the next. Every single night for a week. I sat with it for days, unsure whether it was sweet or sad.

Then it happened

Eventually I did something I'd never have dared before: I added one new track to the playlist and renamed it 'call me'. My phone rang eleven minutes later. We talked until sunrise about everything that went wrong and everything we'd learned since. We're taking it very slowly. The playlist has fifty-two songs now. Our first new song is a duet.

The morning after

Their friends were divided: half thought it was romantic, half thought it was reckless. They've stopped explaining. The playlist is now public and has strangers following it. Someone added a song called 'it's about time'. Nobody knows who.
