The Upgrade
The hotel overbooked and asked two strangers to share the honeymoon suite. Separate beds, they promised.
How it started
A conference in a city I didn't know, a delayed flight and a 1am arrival at a hotel that had given my room away. Behind me in the queue, a tall, exhausted man in a crumpled suit had exactly the same problem. The night manager, sweating, made an offer: the only room left was the honeymoon suite. It had a separate daybed, he swore. Would we consider sharing, free of charge, just for one night? We looked at each other, too tired to be sensible, and said yes. The suite had rose petals on the bed, a bottle of champagne and a heart-shaped bath. We laughed so hard we had to sit on the floor.
Then it happened
We opened the champagne because it would have been rude not to, and talked until sunrise. By morning the daybed was untouched. He's an architect from Lisbon. We've done the conference together every year since, and we've already booked the same suite for next June on purpose. Our friends call it the meet-cute of the century. The night manager got a wedding invitation, and he came, wearing a very proud smile.
The morning after
Their colleagues at the conference noticed them arriving together for breakfast, both in yesterday's clothes and grinning. The rumour spread across three time zones by lunch. The hotel later asked if they could use the story in their marketing. They politely declined, then booked the suite again.
