The Lighthouse Keeper
Her fantasy isn't a person. It's a lighthouse, a storm, and a midnight knock at the door.
How it started
Some people fantasise about celebrities. Mine has always been a whole life. A whitewashed cottage beside a lighthouse on a rocky coast. A fire, a kettle, a big wool jumper, wind rattling the windows. It's midnight in a storm and there's a knock at the door. Someone stands there soaked through, apologetic, their car stuck at the bottom of the hill. They ask if they can wait out the weather until morning. I let them in, hand them a towel, and we talk by the fire until the storm blows itself out. That's it. Nothing more happens in the daydream, and somehow that's the best part.
Then it happened
Last year I did something reckless: I sold my flat and bought a tiny cottage near a real lighthouse on the coast. I work remotely, I walk the cliffs every morning, and I have the wool jumper. The storms are real. The knock hasn't come yet, but the kettle is always full and I've never been happier. Some nights I leave the porch light on, just in case.
The morning after
The village has started to gossip about the mysterious woman in the cottage who walks the cliffs at dawn. The postman lingers a little longer every week. Last Tuesday, during the biggest storm of the year, someone left a single wildflower on her doorstep. No note.
