Midnight, Masked

A Venetian masked ball, one slow dance with a stranger, and a silver feather that arrives every year.

How it started

I went to Venice for Carnival with my sister and, on a whim, we bought tickets to a masked ball in an old palazzo. Candles, a string quartet, ceiling frescoes and hundreds of people in velvet and lace. I wore a black mask and felt like someone else entirely. Near midnight a stranger in a silver mask held out his hand for a waltz. He danced beautifully. We didn't exchange names; it felt like breaking a spell to ask. As the music ended, he leaned close and whispered one sentence in Italian that I didn't understand, then disappeared into the crowd. My sister swears she saw him leave through a side door.

Then it happened

I flew home and assumed that was it. A year later, on the anniversary of the ball, an envelope arrived with no return address. Inside was a single silver feather. It has arrived every year since, five now. I finally had the sentence translated: roughly, 'until we dance again'. My sister says I'm hopeless. I say I'm patient. Next Carnival, I'm going back.

The morning after

Her sister is convinced he's a duke. Her mother thinks he's a con man. Her friends think she should go back and find him. The fifth feather arrived with a train ticket to Venice, dated next February. She hasn't decided. Yet.
