Mum Signed For It
Mum 'helpfully' opened her parcel. She called at 3pm, very calm: 'We need to talk.'
How it started
I'd moved back in with my parents temporarily, and I'd ordered my first toy online, delivered while I was at work. My mum, who is wonderful and has no concept of personal post, 'helpfully' opened the parcel in case it was urgent. At 3pm my phone rang. She was very calm, the way she is when something is very serious. 'We need to talk,' she said, 'about your new… massager.' I wanted to evaporate. I left work early and drove home rehearsing explanations. I pictured her reading the leaflet aloud to my dad. I pictured family dinners for the rest of my life.
Then it happened
When I got home, she was making tea. She'd set the box neatly on the kitchen table. She asked a few questions, very matter-of-fact, and then asked where I'd bought it. She has since asked to borrow the charger twice. We don't discuss why. Dad still doesn't know. Or he does, and he's just very good at pretending, which honestly would make sense in our family.
The morning after
Her mum now forwards her articles about 'women's wellness' every week. Her dad remains blissfully unaware, or pretends to be. Her brother overheard part of the conversation and has refused to discuss it. The charger is still missing.
