The Neighbour Knows

Her discreet parcel went to the neighbour by mistake. She handed it back with a slow wink.

How it started

I'd ordered my first toy and checked every box for discretion: plain packaging, neutral sender name, no logos. The courier still delivered it next door. My neighbour, a glamorous woman in her sixties who gardens in silk scarves, knocked on my door that evening holding a plain brown box. I thanked her, desperately casual. She handed it over, gave me a slow wink and said, 'Great brand.' Then she walked back to her roses. I'd tracked it all day. I'd even worked from home just to be sure. Then I popped out for twenty minutes to buy milk, and of course that was exactly when it arrived. The tracking said 'delivered to neighbour'. I wanted to cry.

Then it happened

I stood in the doorway for a full minute. Since then, we nod at each other across the fence like spies. Last month she handed me a cutting from her garden and whispered, 'They've got a new model out.' Last week she lent me a gardening book. Tucked inside as a bookmark was a discount code for the same shop. I have never loved a neighbour more, and I'm learning a lot about roses.

The morning after

They now swap seasonal tips over the fence, half about gardening and half absolutely not. The neighbour's husband has started waving very enthusiastically. She found a second parcel on her doorstep last week, delivered correctly. Inside was a note: 'You're welcome.'
