The Rain Check
He missed the last train after their first date. She offered the sofa. They talked till 4am and never touched.
How it started
Our first date went so well we lost track of time completely. Dinner turned into a bar, the bar turned into a walk along the river, and by the time we got to the station his last train had gone. Taxis were absurdly expensive. I heard myself say, 'You can have my sofa.' I was nervous the whole walk home, but he took one look at my small, cluttered flat, folded himself onto the sofa with a blanket and asked if I had any board games. We played Scrabble until 4am. He kept making up words with total confidence. I didn't touch him and he didn't touch me, and it was one of the most romantic nights of my life.
Then it happened
In the morning he made eggs, washed up and left with a hug at the door. He texted from the train: 'Best sofa in London.' We've been married six years. He still sleeps on the left side of that sofa when we visit my parents, out of tradition. He says the Scrabble is the real reason he married me. Best breakfast ever, too.
The morning after
Her parents still tell the sofa story at every family gathering. Her dad insists he knew from the moment he saw the Scrabble board. The sofa itself has been reupholstered twice, but nobody is allowed to throw it out.
