My Sister's Ex Texted

At midnight her sister's ex sent three words: 'Is this weird?' It was. She replied anyway.

How it started

My sister dated him for a year, five years ago. It ended amicably; she's now married with twins and genuinely doesn't think about him. I always liked him. He was funny, he called my mum on her birthday and he once drove three hours to jump-start my car. We'd stayed vaguely in touch on social media. Then one night, out of nowhere, a message: 'Is this weird?' Attached was a photo of a gig ticket for a band we'd both loved as teenagers, with a second ticket. I stared at it for an hour. I typed 'very'. Then I deleted it, typed it again and sent it. Then I sent 'yes'.

Then it happened

The gig was wonderful and terrifying. We talked about everything except my sister for three hours, then talked about nothing but her for another one. We decided to tell her before anything happened. She laughed for a full minute and said, 'Honestly, you two make more sense.' Thanksgiving is still going to be a hostage situation. My mum just poured more wine.

The morning after

At the next family dinner nobody mentioned it until dessert, when her aunt loudly asked if they were 'official'. Her sister choked on her wine laughing. Her mum just poured everyone another glass. The twins have started calling him 'Uncle Maybe'.
