Swiped Right on My Boss
At 1am she swiped right on her own manager as a joke. It matched.
How it started
It was a Sunday night, I couldn't sleep and I was swiping with the confidence of someone who'd had two glasses of wine. Then his face appeared: my manager. Smiling on a boat. Profile says 'Looking for someone who laughs at my jokes'. I laughed, but not at his jokes. As a joke, I swiped right. Instant match. I dropped my phone on my face. I lay there for an hour composing apologetic messages and deleting them. Neither of us messaged. On Monday I had a one-to-one with him at ten. It was the longest thirty minutes of eye contact of my life. We discussed quarterly targets while both clearly thinking about the boat.
Then it happened
On Tuesday he left a coffee on my desk, exactly how I take it, with a sticky note: 'We should probably talk to HR first.' We did. I moved teams the following month, so he isn't my manager anymore. Our second date was on the boat. HR said it was the most polite disclosure they'd ever received. The joke match is now our favourite story at dinner parties, told with dramatic pauses.
The morning after
The office pieced it together within a month, thanks to matching tans from the boat. HR printed the disclosure form and pinned a copy to the noticeboard as an example of good practice. Her new team calls him 'the boat guy'.
