Wrong Number, Right Guy
A stranger texted 'Are we still on for dinner?' She said yes just to see what would happen.
How it started
It was a Thursday and a number I didn't know texted me: 'Are we still on for dinner tomorrow? 8pm at Rosa's?' Clearly a wrong number. I should have said so. Instead, with the boldness of someone who'd been single for two years and was very bored, I replied: 'Yes, see you there.' I didn't expect to go. Then Friday came and I thought, why not, Rosa's has great pasta. I sat at the bar at eight. A nervous man in a blue shirt walked in, scanned the room and checked his phone. His date never showed. I waved. I wore my good earrings.
Then it happened
I explained the whole thing. He was mortified, then delighted, then mortified again. The person he'd actually been texting had given him a fake number. We had dinner anyway and closed the restaurant at midnight. That was two anniversaries ago. We go to Rosa's every year and he always orders the same pasta. He says he's grateful for the fake number every single day.
The morning after
The real date with the fake number never found out what she missed. The waiters at Rosa's know their story by heart and bring them a free dessert every anniversary. Their friends retell it at every wedding they attend, usually with embellishments.
